You get more dps from the normal paths and having either Str or Dex up. Buffs are just meant to amplify damage further, which you can't do with the faith path if i'm not mistaken. While yes, people may run, its still a nice way to amp the damage. Not all people run away when they see a dmb ... Clouds, water veil, warding, and cloak are all useful spells that don't rely upon having a high MAG. A little bit of offensive magic (soul arrow, etc.) also works wonders in worlds 1 + 2, even with low MAG. You may also want to consider 18 INT for three spells slots so you can use cursed weapon (see below). .
